Monotonic Testing of Reinforcing Bar Connectors

By Prof. Greg Banas, Joseph Rudd

Reinforcing bar connectors were subjected to monotonic testing in the 600 kip and 100 kip testing frames. Failure modes included bar pull out, fracture at the first thread of the bar, and fracture at the third thread of the bar. A homebuilt extensometer was used to measure slip across the #14 couplers with an adjustable gauge length. A modified Epsilon extensometer with special end plates to acheive a ten inch gauge length for the other sizes tested.
