Bending Test of Rail Bridge Beams

Principal Investigator: Prof. D. Kuchma

Research Assistants: Thomas Nagle and Merhawie Woldezion

Three beams that were cast in 1911 near Gibson City, IL and were part of a 5 span rail road bridge (consisting of 10 beams) were tested to determine if their capacity was been reduced due to deterioration. The beams were loaded by applying 3 line loads, which represented the axle loads of a diesel locomotive, on a 14 foot clear span. The researchers hope to create a viable method to relate visual inspection to capacity in other existing structures in the field.
