Memory Shape Alloy

Seismic resistance of steel and concrete structures can be increased greatly by incorporating tendons made out of shape memory alloys (SMA).  The elastic strain applied to an SMA tendon could be as much as ±8%.  The video below shows an eight-hour laboratory test of an SMA tendon from May 2005. Please note that the frame rate has been increased to better display the test specimen's deformation.
