Characterization of Highway Dampers

Principal Investigator: Prof. D. Foutch

Research Assistant: Jennifer Rice

This project was part of a joint project between the University of Illinois and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The project began with tests on highway sign trusses in the field, followed by testing of the dampers that IDOT had been using on the trusses to reduce wind- and truck-induced vibrations. By reducing the amplitude of the vibration, fatigue could be reduced in the trusses. Lab tests were conducted at UIUC to determine the frequency and damping characteristics of the dampers.
